chickenlady
For the past few days our Silkie has not been coming down and has been spending the them in the nesting box meaning none of the other chickens can lay. However the problem lies with the fact that she still has an egg, which can be felt, inside her and has been there for two to three days. The reason I believe she is broody is that when you open the compartment she fluffs up and does a 'annoyed chicken noise' which my other chickens do when they are broody. However when they are, they all lay their eggs before they start being broody, but the Silkie hasn't. Is she just a slow layer or is the egg 'stuck' or is she not laying because she is broody? Thanks Ps. When we lift her out of the nesting box in the morning she will eat and drink happily then return back to it after 10- 15 minutes. laurmurf
I would suggest you 'break' the broodiness in a broody cage/wire floored dog crate elevated from the ground (or hanging from a tree). That will let the others in to lay and allow her to get out of the broody-trance and lay her egg. Silkies do go broody quite frequently and easily so you'll need to be ready for this to keep happening.
mimi5
Hi there! My pekins go broody at the drop of a hat So I invested in a wire (plastisc coated) cat carrier (ebay) and some plastic clip on cups for food and water. Just pop it on a couple of bricks in the cube run and put your girlie in for 3 days straight, mostly works......but sometimes my Molly needs longer With more girls this year.......may need to invest in another
