smartrus
Hi all, its been quite a while since my last post. I am enjoying all 10 chickens, 5 of which I introduced successfully thanks to all the advice on this forum. This query isn't actually about my own chickens but my mother inlaws. She has a mixture of breeds, but all of them without exception have naked bright red bottoms!! I haven't seen anything like it before. My mother inlaw told me that it she was told this is because they laying well. My chickens are laying very well and we have no sign of this. So hopefully you lovely experts will be able to shed some light on the subject!
daxigirl
I read that recently too, can't remeber where. It was something to do with the feathers looking a bit dry and tatty and then baldy bots. The explanation was along the lines of the hen putting her energies into egg production and the feathers suffered as a result (bit like having badly conditionned hair). The new feathers won't come through till the big moult. This was how you could tell your best layers apparently.
smartrus
mmmm, interesting, maybe she was right then. Aren't they strange creatures? Lets hope they get some soon, they look more like baboons than chickens!
daxigirl
Or it could just be someone in the troop has got the naughty habit of feather plucking.
Redwing
Its feather pecking, can be self inflicted or by a bully but defintely feather pecking. The red skin is because of exposure to light thats all Unless the skin is also sore I wouldnt worry about that but the feather pecking needs addressing really
