SylvisMum
I had been thinking about getting one of the Tefal 8 in 1 cookers, but in the meantime they went up in price on Amazon and the Breville went to half price in Argos. So I got one of those. It is a basic model but you can do rice (obviously) and steam veg. I have used it to make rice with and it does it so much better than on the hob. And is a doddle to wash up. Still experimenting - Basmati needs extra boiled water added at the beginning of Keep Warm otherwise it comes out a bit dry. Sainsbury's basics rice came out very good the second time but I found I needed to rinse it really well as the first time it was starchy (but still fine) Does anyone on here have one and use it for risottos etc? I am still yearning a bit for the Tefal but there must be other things I can do in a basic model.
patsylabrador
According to one of my rice cooker books - Everything Rice Cooker by Hui Leng Tay - the on-off rice cookers like your one are better for cooking entire meals, she has some great recipes and if you were a student in one room with a rice cooker and her book you would eat very well indeed. I've learnt a lot about rice cooking from my new books and rinse the rice before cooking like a person possessed. If we have a drought I'll be in trouble but that seems unlikely. My favourite at the moment is to switch the cooker on, heat butter, salt and sprigs of lemon thyme. Chuck in 450g of very well washed long grain rice and just over one pint water, stir and carry on with programme. The recipe says to strip the lemon thyme first but I am v lazy and just pick out the stems during the keep warm phase. It seems easier. This is utterly delicious rice and goes with lots of things. I would eat rice every day now, it's so much fun to use the cooker.
