Suzanne
I don't know what Clara and Juliet thought about it but it was quite scarey. We live on high ground and so have never been worried by flooding. That is until yesterday. When we woke the lane was a torrent of rushing water, the road was breaking up. Our house, high up looked down on the water but the houses below us were quickly in trouble. We decided to leave the girls in their run, with shower curtain and shade to keep the torrential rain off them. By midday we realised that the garden was totally saturated and was forming lakes. We have lived here for 30 years and this had never happened before. The run was on the highest part of the garden but eventually this began to have a large puddle at the run door. I decided that the only dry place would be in the Eglu and much to their surprise I persuaded them at 2pm. with food as a bait to go into their Eglu and I shut the door. I opened the side and popped in a dish of water and some layers pellets and splashed my way back to the house . I felt bad but told myself that they were safe and dry and had more room than battery hens. I watched from the window to see that the water did not rise up and could come into the Eglu. It got very close .I watched all afternoon. I then had a battle with the man of the house because I wanted to bring the girls into the laundry but at this point it eased off slightly. It was about 5pm. The water in their run pulled back a little and I let them out to stretch their legs. Eventually they went into bed a little later than usual. They do not seem any worse for their strange day and are happy free ranging this morning in a very soggy garden. I think they did a lot better than many people in Gloucestershire in the last 24 hours. It is great to know that the Eglu is waterproof !! A great invention ! Milly
I agree about the eglu - ours did very well yesterday given the extreme weather conditions. We aren't flooded, fortunately, but everything is squelchy (including the hens when I put them to bed last night). The advice I got about wet hens drying out overnight was absolutely right. Cheltenham was particularly bad yesterday, my husband couldn't get home until this morning (we are near Tewkesbury). Milly
anjuli
Sounds horrific for you over there. I saw the pictures on the news... Visions of the eglu floating off like Noah's Ark....
Gallina
I've just had a thought: all these floods are going to encourage even more people to get a Cube!
