Soft shells and uneven coloured eggs

Recommended Posts

Another chicken problem I have is that some days two of the girls' eggs can be quite soft or weak shelled and also very uneven in colour. They sort of have paler and darker patches rather than being a uniform colour - the darker patches in particular look as if they should be soft, although when you touch them they are not. In addition, when they are like this, they are quite rough as well, not nice and smooth. Other days I will get nice even coloured and smooth shelled or "normal" eggs.

They are on Garvo layers mash and have extra grit available. They have mealworms as a treat every day and they get plenty of fresh water.

The only thing I need to check is when I last wormed them - would this affect egg quality?

yes, worms can affect egg quality (I think)

I had a 'issue' with deteriorating eggs. It was suggested that I wormed them and that sorted it out

Do they have a source of extra calcium? (eg oyster shell grit or limestone flour) - if not, I'd also try that
