First Hatch of 2013

Recommended Posts

It's lockdown from midday tomorrow (Tuesday). Eggs stop turning - woohooo! I put 10 eggs in & now have 7 that have made it to the end, 2 were infertile & one had a blood ring when candled earlier in the process.

So hoping for 4 black silkies & 3 Ancona (Duncan) x frizzle pekins.

I am very excited to see what Duncan's offspring will look like. Will they come out plain feathered? Will they look like frizzle Anconas? Will they have a touch of lavender? Will they be spotty dotty pekins? Will they have straight or rose combs? Hmmm so many questions? I suppose it all depends on the dominant genes. Will be nice to get a surprise.

First hatch this year - next to g in the incubator as soon as this little lot hatch, are my Barbu D'anver eggs from Tommy & Titch. 8) Can't wait for those, as that little couple are very very sweet & I have quite soft spot for them.

Day 18, so countdown & erm...whistling to the eggs to make them erm....wobble. He he.

Oh, how exciting. I've still got 15 days to go on my first hatch of 2103. My Pekin, Biscuit, was first to go broody this year,so she got the eggs (6 x Silver Laced Wyandottte). The other two (Caramel and Honey) are also now broody, but not sat on anything for the moment. I'm letting them sit until next week, just in case Biscuit gives up, then they'll need to spend some time in the broody cage to snap them out of it until later in the year. Biscuit is my best 'Mummy Hen', she's never abandoned eggs before and isn't at all fazed by hatching LF eggs, even though the chicks get bigger than her within just a few weeks!

Keep us updated, and don't forget, photo's are mandatory .

We also have 2 red kite nests in an old ash tree! Last years youngsters have now decided to nest there too, as well as their parents.

My eggs hatched 6 out of 7. So I've got 3 Ancona (bantam) x lavender frizzle pekins. They look like little fluffy magpies with fluffy feet. Then I have 3 black silkies, although 2 have white under their chins & white bellies. One also looks more of a blue colour, but time will tell. One of the silkies looks bearded & has a reall fluffy teddy boy hairdo. I've called it Alvin, after Alvin Stardust - don't ask!

I'm very pleased with them all.
