Broody & which eggs query - Update

Recommended Posts

Ok not being experienced in big girl broodys I find myself with Persil feeling the need to sit. It's been a few days now, keep turfing her out and taking the eggs as they are announced. Anyway I was wondering if she would sit on bantam eggs? If so would it be worth giving her the 4 OEGs that are 2 weeks on in the incubator or would she squash/reject them etc? Also how would she get on with tiny chicks or is that not a problem for them. She's not that big LF herself. Any advice, knowledge taken on board.

Large fowl happily sit on Bantam eggs. They are also quite happy raising small chicks, and don't seem at all fussed that 'their' chicks never seem to grow to the size expected. My (very large!) broody Orp was totally un-phased at the Pekin chicks that suddenly appeared under her one night . The LF eggs she was sat on all failed, so we inserted day-old chicks in their place. We never intended to raise Pekins, but that was the only 1-day old chicks that I could source at short notice!

All were raised without any problems, and one of those Pekin girls has now just hatched LF silver laced Wyandotte chicks, so the situation is reversed this time round.

Have arranged Persil in an indoor cage with a washing up bowl for a nest (seems to be working well) she's settled down happily enough so I've given her the OEGs from the incy to sit on. Rather exciting with 2 lots set to hatch at the weekend. Not sure where they'll all go when a couple of weeks old. Will have to find a rabbit hutch or something.

Persil is the incredibly proud mama to 3 girls and 1 boy (hadn't realised I'd bought sexable OEG so there's a stroke of luck) Evil Edna is still sitting but there hasn't been any action yet. Will try and steal one of Persil's babies and swap for an egg when I come home from work. Really diddy little chicks, can't wait to have a good look.

Got me timings worked out wrong as I wasn't expecting them till the weekend.

Gave Edna a chick from Persil's brood last night and removed the 2 eggs that were left this morning. Upon candling they hadn't broken the airsack and there was no sign of life.

So hopefully the mums will start moving about today and showing the babies how to do stuff. Love the gentle noises they make when talking to them. Edna was as pleased as punch with her baby which I suspect will be a keeper and move into the bantie kingdom with her mum. Can't keep all of them though :(

They are incredibly cute, about the size of my thumb. Both mum's are letting me have a squish of them.

(Came in last afternoon from work and to my horror thought Persil had killed one but on closer inspection found it was a giant poo! Phew, quite literally took ages for the aroma to disipate. )
