Scrawny looking chickens

Recommended Posts

My 6 girls are all laying but genereally look dishevelled and have lots of bare patches. Is this something to worry about or not? And if so, what can I do?

I have had them 12 months and have always prided myself on how good they look but over the past few weeks I have noticed them getting lots of these bare patches and looking quite scrawny and dishevelled. But as I said, they are all laying!

I'm sure others who are more knowledgeable will come on soon, but I'd say it is one of three things (in no particular order)

1 - feather plucking if bored : antidote would be to give them some 'toys' e.g. a clump of swinging raw spinach leaves or half a coconunt

2 - putting everything into egg laying so how about giving them a little cider vinegar in their water and some meal worms as treats

3 - a part moult due to the odd weather. Again I'd give some cider vinegar and meal worms. I have one girl who is most deffinitely moulting which is odd at this time of year but I've put it down to the peculiar weather.
