funtimeally
One of my hens was attacked by a fox yesterday (this was an opportunist attack and has never happened in my whole 3 years of owning hens!!). She was in terrible shock, but thankfully made it through the night. There are no visible wounds (no blood anywhere) and she has been eating, drinking and looking perkier today. However she is reluctant to move and when i put her on the lawn this afternoon she was limping. She does put a little bit of weight on the leg so i'm wondering if it's just badly bruised?? She also stands with her tail drooping down so i know that she's not happy. I think i'm going to take her to the vet tomorrow to get checked out, but any other advice anyone could give would be much appreciated. amycribyn
I would just keep her rested and make sure the other hens dont bully her, lets just hope it's a strain.
Olly
Are you quite sure there's no puncture wound anywhere? It can be hard to spot under feathers. It's possible that she sprained or bruised something in trying to get away from the fox in a panic, and if that's the case it should improve over time. You are quite right however that if her general posture is not looking happy - tail down, hunched, not eating or drinking - then there may be something else wrong, so if she doesn't perk up I would take her to the vet for a check-over.
