Egg laying bantams

Recommended Posts

Hello all.My first post.I have 2 ex batts and have been recomended by the vet not to eat eggs as have had Baytril. So i would like 2 more that lay a different colour egg so as not to mix them up with ex batts eggs.I would like egg laying bantams.Do you know of any bantams or small light fowl that lay well and wont get mixed up with ex batt eggs?

Bantams usually lay smaller eggs so you woN't mix them up with the hybrids' eggs. I don't know any bantams that lay as well as commercial hybrids. Personally I eat eggs from chickens that have had baytril after a 7 day withdrawal period but I know that is not recommended.

When we had baytril originally we were told we could eat the eggs after a withdrawal period... I think the advice varies and/or has changed but I also still eat them. Don't know much about bantams but you could get some cream crested legbar or aracuna hens so they lay blue?

I have a Frizzle and a Pekin, there is a small pale egg in the nesting box every 7-10 days or so. I'm new to bantams, they are only approx 22 weeks old. I'm hoping egg production will pick up a bit?! I also have a Gold Laced Orpington, a White Star hybrid and a Miss Pepper pot hybrid. They all lay daily with the odd break of a day. Both my hybrids are friendly and the Miss Pepper pot is broody and sitting on eggs at the moment! I've read hybrids don't normally become broody? I tried to discourage her from sitting with the usual techniques I've read, but nope she was persistent. Hopefully she will get bored soon!

My Pekin Bantams lay daily although in the heat their egg production has slowed down a little bit - no way you can mix them up my girls eggs are pale (almost white) and VERY small so you can't mix it up ;) in the winter we get maybe 1 egg every 2 weeks..

But be warned Pekin Bantams do go broody and I have one that has been broody for 6 months :P = NO eggs!! They are great though and would need an even more careful intro to L/F due to their little size - I have done it before with no issues :)
