sjp Posted August 17, 2013 Share Posted August 17, 2013 looks like I've finally got a half decent hatch this year I've had 2 first time broodies sharing 9 eggs due to hatch today (7/08) they both gave up on day 17 Wednesday luckily Rebecca my number 1 broody decided that she wanted to be a mom again last weekend so I'd put 3 of the eggs under her Sunday night the I put the remaining 5 cold eggs under her on Wednesday they'd been left up to 5hrs well I now have as of 8am 4 chicks all dry and fluffy and at least 2 of them are from the abandoned eggs and 2 are clean necked and Rebecca hasn't realised that she's only been sitting for 6 days!! I'm glad she couldn't do the maths thank you I just wish she wasn't turning into a clumsy mare last hatch she crushed 3 eggs with chicks in. yesterday she crushed another one luckily I got to it in time to help it out of the membrane. an hour later I found it out on it's own a bit cold and not yet dry so it's been in the incubator now for about 14hrs it's still unsteady on it's feet but it can now open it's eyes which it didn't do last night which is why it's still in the 'bator but I think it wasn't quite ready to hatch as it looks a bit tatty. I'll keep it in doors till tonight then pop it back under Rebecca I should add it's her own chick and the first of hers she's hatched herself to, the others were incubator hatched and hatched by Hope my number 2 broody so that's 5 out off 9 hatched with 3 as of last night still to hatch and one that I broke earlier in the week so I'm happy with this hatch all eggs were fertile and just over 50% hatched on or before day 18 not bad for eggs that have been under 3 broodies and just over half the clutch were left to get cold Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
