Changing names

Recommended Posts

Are chickens smart enough to know their own names? We have 3 young bantams (my daughters named two and i picked dolly). Agnes, dolly and phoebe. Agnes is fine, no problems there. phoebe I've always had a problem with and keep calling her daphne (wasn't even on the short list so no idea why I do this). Finally after having them 5 weeks I need to change dollys name cos my dog is called Molly and its causing all sorts of confusion for her (silly dog). My mum and youngest daughter don't want me to change the names incase I confuse them but I reckon chickens spend most of he time in complete befuddlement :anxious:

They'll probably not even notice..

Nope, I don't think they know their own names :D

I think they respond to your tone of voice and the ever-seductive rattle of that tub of meal-worms....

Mine also chase me up the garden if they think I'm headed to either the summerhouse, where all things chook are stored, and I might have carelessly forgotten to put the lid on those meal-worms or on the 'scratch' corn, or to my greenhouse, where tasty tomatoes might be *just* within reach

When we aquired 3 hens with an eglu and run I did ask the owners young daughter what the chicken's names were.... and promptly forgot again (probably because I was being shown all the other animals they had). So Pearl, Onyx and Coral they became for the 2-3 years we had them until they died.

Thinking now we wonder if any of our chooks actually realise they each have a name, but we're sure they do know if we're talking to them as they burble back at us.
