kentuckyfried
I have agreed to buy 2 colonies in nationals from a local BKA member Saturday evening I get to go and bring them home- very excited
Mrs Webmuppet
How exciting! My OH said I fret more about our one hive of bees than I ever fretted when I had Little Miss Webmuppet
kentuckyfried
Well, we picked up 2 colonies in nationals last night- very odd being n the car with approx. 20,000 bees One hive has a glass crown board, which was fun to watch before they came home
Mrs Webmuppet
I have a clear crown board too. Perfect for the watching but not disturbing.
Old Speckled Hen
Wonderful. Lots of fun to come next Spring. Can I ask how much you paid? I ask as I was offered a colony and they wanted £250 for it. Good and strong with a brood box jammed with brood and bees.

Good for keeping an eye on stores through the winter especially. All you need is one of those little powerful LED torches and you can see instantly if there are empty frames next to the bees. kentuckyfried
Clarifying... but hive I mean floor, brood box, crownboard, roof and 11 frames + colony. Think I got a very very good deal
Olly
I think you did!
Old Speckled Hen
Blimey!!!! Even a five frame nuc in a correx box is £150.....let alone a full colony plus a hive. Didn't go for the one I was offered. 4 is enough for me...that's 8 boxes if they all have to be AS'd in the same season.
kentuckyfried
I tried to have a look today, and got 2 stings and chased down the garden for my troubles Stings disappeared pretty quickly once I got anthisan on them though. All in one suit and a 'proper' smoker are on their way- they obviously weren't impressed by my boiler suit and liquid smoke. Lesson learned I don't think they are evil bees, I just handled them very badly.
