clucker1
Well, Sunday pm was Cluck wouldn't eat her treats and retreated to the cube. Was very worried. Yesterday she wasn't much better. Today, a huge crop, still quite squidgy, though now she doesn't like me catching her so wondering if I am hurting her when I pick her up, although she is well behaved when I have caught her. Giving her yogurt and her beloved bokashi bran, but she isn't eating that much....seems to still LOVE corn. Will chase off the other girls for corn. Think I will get her some more lovely maggots YUCK!!!!!!!!!
libby22
What a shame. Do you have a cat basket she can go into? I put mine by the door of the cube and throw mealworms into it - as the others try to climb in, I throw some to the end of the cube and eventually, with a bit of patience, as the others scatter, she should just walk in and saves you having to catch her. She is marvellous at 3.5 - great age. If her crop is huge and squishy, do you think it feels like it is filled with fluid? Do you have a vet you can take her to? I know not everyone has a vet nearby that is good with chickens so it doesn't always help. I used to go to one that admitted they were still learning and didn't do much good at all, but have finally found one now that knows about chickens. Fingers crossed
clucker1
Well, TBH I was considering having her culled this pm when I saw her with her wriggly neck this afternoon. At this point I felt very strongly this was the best option. Then throughout the pm when she was free ranging I monitored her and she is still quite able to chase the other lesser! chickens in the pecking order to get something if she wants it. Then her keenness to eat corn too made me decide otherwise. I am keeping a firm eye on her at the moment. I did try tipping her upside down too this pm, but nothing came out, not sure if I am doing it right though. Cluck doesn't seem to mind and she doesn't mind me massaging her crop either. Will see what tomorrow brings.
clucker1
UPDATE: Cluck is doing well. Found her on top of one of the junior chickens today twice so she could get some food. Still slightly separate from the rest of the girls and the last to get the treats but apart from that she is ok. Maggots (yuck!!) bokashi bran and yogurt (mixed with porridge so she eats it) all seems to work well. Have stopped separating her from the main lot to feed and they all end up with treats and she eats all this up speedily. Gets stressed when I separate her and doesn't eat much. So, at the moment will keep her with the rest of the girls.
libby22
That's a good idea - anything to reduce the stress helps. She sounds well and if it were a blockage, she wouldn't have lasted this long. Could be she is slowing down with getting older, but she sounds like she is still full of beans bless her.
clucker1
UPDATE: Cluck continues to do well, eating a lot of bokashi bran. Giving it ad lib. She is fine enough to chase the other girls away, despite there being 3 pots of bran, so everyone can get some silly girls! Had a bit of wriggly neckitis tonight so will prob give her double dose of yogurt and bokashi in the morning.

clucker1
Thank you for that Libby. TBH, I just wanted her to make it at least until Christmas....I did previously think my favourite was on the wain. However she is now 3 and three quarters so making her an elderly chicken so doing well with her OAP bokashi pension!

clucker1
Well Cluck is now in the fluffy white clouds. She had been doing OK apart from being a little old lady chicken. Then, yesterday she wouldn't come out of the cube until we put some of her beloved bokashi bran out and she came out and gobbled that down. Then this morning we found her. Still she was nearly 4 years old and had a good life. BUT she was my favourite (don't tell the others!) She was so sweet and when I gardenend she would always help me with those worms. RIP Cluck. xxx

RIP Cluck.
libby22
I am so sorry to read about Cluck - she sounded like such a little fighter bless her and she was such a great age. I hope my girls live that long. You did everything you could for her, it is just heart breaking when they go, nothing fills the little gap they leave behind. Sorry again, hope you are ok. xx
clucker1
Yes thank you Libby22, Cluck sorted out those junior chickens which was everyone except Darthveda, especially when it came to HER bokashi bran!! Sad, but not too bad, it was inevitable, just she was my fave. She used to follow me round the garden so much and plonk herself down on me for a cuddle. The others don't do that.
