Guest
Poor Bunny Rabbit is not having an easy time of it. Last night I put bamboo poles in the run to split it - like the picture on here but this morning the girls had limbo'd under them and poor Bunny was cowering in her hutch. I let her freerange today but she stayed near the Eglu on her own apart from when the others came to have a go at her, at bedtime she tried to roost in a tree! I had to cuddle her into her hutch. I've put extra bamboo canes in the run tonight, hope this keeps them apart in the morning before we get up. Any other things I should try - I feel so sorry for her being lonely and picked on. Sarah 2
Looks like you've done a great job with the bamboo. What about shutting them in the eglu until you get up? So you can keep an eye on them. Have you tried them sleeping together and letting them out to free range together. I found this worked for me. They did pick on the newbie for a little while. But apparently if they sleep together they get used to each others smell. I'm not sure if this is true and I'm not an experienced chicken keeper. Guest
I was going to try letting them sleep together tonight but I felt soo sorry for her trying to roost up the tree that I caved and put her into her hutch. I will try her in the Eglu tomorrow - easier said than done as she is a big bird and putting her through the egg port will be hard, both the others sleep right there, usually 1 in the nest box and one at the back next to it. Sarah 2
I know it's horrible. I couldn't even watch mine get one peck. Because I knew what sort of time mine like to go to bed. I cheated and took the newbie away and put her in a box until it was really dark and then put her through the egg port. We have a chicken that seems to be the size of a small dog. She's difficult to get out of the egg port too. So I know exactly what you mean. You've just got to do what's best for you. I'm sure she'll be fine. Maybe leave Bunny in the run for a few days while the other two free range so they can all get used to each other.
Sarah 2
Penguinmad how was bunny's day today?
Guest
Bunny had a better day dotay, explored more of the garden and was seen close to the others a couple of times. I havn't seen any real nastiness towards her.

millymeerkat
Last night we had to construct a bamboo divider too as we got two new hens on Saturday to add to our existing two and they were not getting on at all. We have put the canes in horizontally and been quite precise about their positioning (one cane every two gaps in the wire run I think) and then tied them to the run with string and sort of looped and crossed over the bamboo canes, keeping the string taught which has made them very sturdy. Then the trouble maker will be less likely to find a large gap and go for it. I'll try and post a pic of what we did on here later, as I am at dreary old work right now! Today is the first day that our hens have each been in their half of the run, so hopefully things are alright when we return home later! Hope everything works out for you, Milly
