arowland17
we had our 1st egg on 2nd aug, and another on 4th and 5th, but I thought it was Nugget laying them as she's larger, a LOT calmer and has larger redder comb and red face compared to Buttercup, yet yesterday Buttercup laid us the 3rd egg right in front of us in the flowerbed!! I'm so confused am thinking maybe they're both laying - would they lay so frequently if it was only Buttercup? They're both RIR/light sussex crosses and I think the breeder said we'd get 5-6 eggs a week or so from each of them I just don't know whether they start off slowly or once they start laying they'll keep going almost everyday. Also, I always assumed that eggs were laid in the morning / lunchtime, but all 3 of our eggs have been laid in the early evening at 5.30 - 6.30 pm - is that unusual? it means that they are always free-ranging when they lay and they've not quite realised that there is a nesting box or what it's for! I did put yesterdays egg into the nesting box straight after it'd been laid, and left it there till they had gone to bed but I'm not sure if they are bright enough to even notice it! any tips on getting them to lay in there, or will they get the hang of it as they get older and more used to laying? BeckyBoo
Apparently it takes about 25 hours to make an egg so they get later and later every day then they take a day off and start again in the morning, which actually is a fairly accurate description of ours! Ours laid very erratically to start with so I wouldn't worry too much. As for getting them to lay inthe nest, not really sure. Could you leave them in the run for a whole day so they HAVE to lay in the nest, once they've done something once they seem to get the hang of it. arowland17
Ours have been getting later each day so it could be just one of them laying - unless we catch them in the act we have no way of knowing, I was sure Buttercup wasn't laying till we saw her! We did leave them in the run all day Saturday and got home late at night to find the entire contents of their nestbox strewn across the grass and an egg in the middle of all the mess in the run!
