It's a longshot but does anyone know of anywhere reasonably priced to have a special meal in Cologne. ES will be there (a suprise) just before Christmas on his 21st birthday. It doesn't have to be posh, just memorable.

Near the area next to the Old town in the bit that avoided extensive bombing and next to the river down from a square near a bridge there is a row of restaurants. In amongst them is a dark, wooden beamed one which serves big plates of gorgeous German food. The red cabbage was the best ever.

That is a lovely memory if not very helpful.

That square holds a Christmas Market so it's the market near the river that isn't the floating market or the Medieval one.

My memory tells me it is the Altermarkt, we walked down MühlingStrasse towards the river. Now I'm pretty sure that at the bottom you turn right and the restaurant is somewhere along there towards Deutzer Brücke. Of course this could all be totally bad memory recall but it's a starting point. I do remember that YS roared with delight when his meal was served and made the waiter jump.
