nanarock
I have mentioned in the past we adopted a chicken 2 years ago that has never layed an egg Which was ok when we had 3 other chickens that did lay. unfortunately two of them became to old to lay and died of natural causes leaving one young chicken Leonora that did lay and Caudelia the above mentioned none laying chicken. My question is( eventually you are saying!) Leonora has not layed an egg now for months is it possible she has stopped laying because Claudelia doesnt bother? I know we have just had the winter but I thought Leonora should have started producing eggs again. It is warm in the Eglu cube as we have the extreme weather jacket on it and we feed and water the girls well and they free range on the garden daily. In fact they are spoilt rotten and in good health. Am I being impatient. The other girls near enough layed all year round. We are going to buy some more chickens soon. Should we part with Claudelia? Dont want to really. Sorry this post is so long winded. Nanarock.
Valkyrie
2 of mine haven't. Last year our little pekin (7 years this year) was excused but she started up in May. Likewise with the buff Sussex, but then she laid softies and brittle ones. I'm still not expecting them to perform this year but a happy surprise if they do. Perhaps hold off on the treats and just pellets for a while. They can still roam around. I wouldn't think Claudelia is part of the non-laying. My younger birds are quicker to start. My 6 year old maran has only just started.
nanarock
thanks for replying, We have bought another 4 amber star 17 weeks old chickens and keeping the other two. They are seperated from the newbies at the moment and we are allowing them to free range on the garden all together a couple of times a day. Claudelia started to be a bit aggressive but she does'nt bother them if we stand holding a broom with which we use to shoo her off. We were originally going to get some german lemon chickens and had chosen names for them but the breeder had stopped selling that breed. We still liked the names so we have called the newbies Helga, Holga, Gretchan (Not sure about spelling) and Gertrude. . We are also going to buy some guinea pigs soon for the grandchildren but keep them with us for when they visit as they live in a flat and don't have a garden. Quite excited about taking them to choose two.
