What to do about heat lamp

Recommended Posts

my 3 and half week old chicks are really thriving. They are in the garage, which has windows. I've noticed they've been avoiding the heated are, so turn it off during the day. I would really love to put them outside for a bit, but the weather is just not good enough. I had an SAD (daylight lamp), do you think they would benefit from that.

They are scratching around like mad, as soon as we get the weather they will be out in a run during the day.

Any advice in the meantime :)

Chicks benefit a lot from daylight, so I think the SAD lamp would be a good idea. We use an electric hen for chicks, when they have daylight as well, otherwise in a windowless room we use a white light in the day and a black (ceramic) light at night. So we have two lamps set up and switch one or other on accordingly, which is time consuming. Of course all these lamps (or electric hen) have to be continually adjusted to slowly reduce the floor temperature, which of course takes more time.

Is there any way you can adjust the temperature of the heated area in the day, because a sudden change in the weather and they may still need it?
