Luvachicken
I have searched the lice and mites pages but I cannot find where it says how often you should dust chickens. I think I have found lice on 2 of my girls so I dusted them all with DE as best I could. Should I be sprinkling DE everywhere in the cube ? I usually just use the red mite powder but should I be using both ? Also one of the grey pekins decided it was a good idea to eat the powder It said on the bottle it could be eaten by animals I know DE is made of crushed diatoms but what is red mite powder made of and how come they don't appear to be the same thing or do the same job ? Ain't Nobody Here
I've always been confused about those 2 products too . I used them both enthusiastically in the beginning, dusting the girls with DE and putting it in their food and putting Red Mite in the eglu. I don't use either so much now, just a squirt of Red Mite in the nestbox when I clean it out and I've recently been putting DE down in the areas they dustbathe. I think what you're doing, ie reacting to finding lice is probably fine although I've used Johnson's Lice and Mite Spray when I found lice. That works well.
