Sad endings but new begins - advice needed

Recommended Posts

Hi not so long ago we had 4 girls but now we have 1, I'm assuming my hen needs some mates am I correct ?

How will she cope with adding 6 POA girls if it's concluded she requires some friends ?

I currently have a Eglu but think if I increase I'm going to need a cube does anyone have either a very good second hand one for sale in kent or know of any discount codes if brought direct from Omlet ?

Sorry one final question, what is the best surface for keeping hens on ? I currently have big chunky wooden bark from B&Q on mud.

Thanks for taking the time to read and sorry for multiply questions

She will need mates but perhaps 6 is a rather big step. In a few weeks you will know if she is unhappy. If she stops eating and seems in a trace she is suffering from lack of company and from there will just fade away.A muddy run is a definite no, so I would see about improving that first. Bark is good, but it need a covering and/ or drainage to keep it dry. How much run space have you got, because it should be at least 2 square metres each hen if permanently enclosed.

I would prob introduce just two POL to her,it will take some time for them to adjust . You can always introduce another three later. That will give you time to source another coop. Personally I would go for two smaller coops as it is always handy to have one for intros, quarantines etc. My run is on what was once grass but now has a ring of paving slabs and mud/earth in middle with wood chip on top.

Thank you I will sort the ground out, just stand sharp sand ?? What about gravel ? I was looking to get the cube with 3 meter run, poor little onion she's eating ok at the moment but seems to be pacing around the garden and squarking and occasions.
