Breathing problems

Recommended Posts

Hello

Last week, one of our chickens came out of the coop rather poorly, having trouble breathing and making some odd noises. I took a video of her:

...but less than 30mins later, she had died. I've since tried to work out what was wrong with her, not least to know if I should be worried about the other chickens, but breathing problems seem to be linked to everything from the common cold to chronic, terminal illnesses. I'm just interested to know if anyone else has seen these sorts of breathing problems and whether they found out what was wrong. We treat regularly for worms and mites, they have plenty of outdoor and indoor space, and she was just 2 years old. She had had sour crop a couple of months ago, but we nursed her through that and she seemed to have made a full recovery ...

Many thanks

H

We think it is a heart condition which causes the lungs to fill with fluid (there is a human condition the same but the name escapes me), hence the difficulty breathing and the cough to clear it. We had one very similar last year, although she was nearly 8 years old. It came on very quickly and she died soon afterwards leaving a big pool of fluid (from her beak) on the floor. So there was absolutely nothing you could have done for her Hburningham.
