Hayleybug
Hi all, i've not posted for a while and have been looking into perches recently as i'm a bit concerned that my plastic shower rails in the run might not be suitable for the girls as they are very rounded and probably a bit slippy for the feet. i've read lots of articles about having a flatter (but rounded edges) surface to a perch rather than fully circular. and these girls are smaller than my original girls who were Wyandotte bantams so not sure the set up is quite right...can anyone advise what they use as perches and does it really matter about the surface shape that much? Also, how high off the ground is best as the poles are currently level with the table that has the Eglu on it but i'm a bit worried it might be too much of a drop to the floor for their feet and dont want to risk bumblefoot (particularly for the silkie who as much as she thinks she can flap her wings, she cant!). i'll post a pic in the replies from my phone to show how my set up is currently. thankyou!! Beantree
Think you are right that plastic shower rails are unsuitable. For our bantams we have 60mm wide x 30mm deep pine with 3mm radius edges. Height does depend on how soft the landing is, but we always play safe and make them low. They just need enough room to walk underneath, even if they need to duck a bit. Hayleybug
thanks Beantree- i did read somewhere that putting a bike inner tube around the rails might make them easier to grip but i think still the foot would be in the wrong shape... did you just buy lengths of wood from a DIY shop or buy a pre-made perch? i do have a useful husband who could be roped into a bit of DIY if need be
