sarahg
I need some help - decided to take the plunge and buy an eglu but now I need to decide which chickens! I love pekins but I also like the idea of eggs and know that pekins are not that prolific. I like 'pretty' chickens as well - like the maran and bluebelle. Can I mix larger chooks with pekins in the eglu and will they fight? Also does anyone know of any breeders in reading or the surrounding area that breeds chooks - I'm having a nightmare finding any! Martin B
I know Sarah (Cinnamon) lives in Henley, but she often seems to be in Reading so it may be worth asking her. Martin
Guest
Pekins are lovely - very pretty and ideal for showing (if you are in to that). But mine have just reached POL and they only lay about 1 egg ever 2 days or so and they are quite small. In our flock I would say that the ISA Browns lay the best. They are hybrids so won't live as long as the pure breeds but they produce very large eggs (for the size of the bird) and lay every day without fail... I would say my sussex and rhode island reds are next (slightly larger in size but the eggs are slightly smaller compared to the ISA browns). Again they seem to lay pretty well - 1 egg every 1 or 2 days... But I have so many different breeds and it would take too long to go into them all the best thing to do is find a couple of breeds that suit you. Either for looks or egg laying ability and research into them to narrow down the options.
