Lucky or Foxwatch?

Recommended Posts

I hope I am not tempting fate by writing about this subject, but here goes!

On several occasions over the past couple of weeks, I have seen foxes in my garden, standing only yards away from my freeranging girls and - thankfully - completely ignoring them and sniffing around the molehills on the lawn. Needless to say, I run out in a panic shouting at the foxes, who duly run away into the wood at the bottom of our field where I suspect they are living. My garden is also full of pheasants, and these too are ignored by the foxes. All the foxes I have seen look in good condition and are obviously not starving, but I thought that they would kill just for the fun of it anyway.

I do have a Foxwatch which is not working properly and is on all the time and not just when something crosses the beam - could this account for the foxes not approaching the girls? Or have I just been incredibly lucky so far?

I am really worried about letting the girls out of the eglu run now.

:shock: I think you've been incredibly lucky! Even if your local foxes are not starving, they will find it hard to resist a chicken dinner - foxes often live on mice, rats, beetles (and moles) etc, so the chance of something larger would be very tempting.

I have a Foxwatch as a deterrent - I don't rely on it, but since I got it I haven't (touch wood) seen the fox in the garden, whereas before he was a regular visitor. I suspect that if the fox is hanging around anyway, maybe your Foxwatch isn't working at all.

'My' local fox is so bold, he doesn't even leave the garden until I throw something at him or run towards him shouting! Please don't take any chances - I think you have been very lucky so far.
