waders
Hi everyone, Still reeling from the excitement of the first egg! A thought occurred to me after reading Karl and Andy's tally chart (Only one egg but I'm expecting great things!), how do you know who laid which egg? It's obvious that it's Betty at the moment because the other two are still immature but when they start too how will I know? Are Pepperpot eggs different to Gingernut? If they are then at least I will be able to tell Minnie's. I suppose if Betty carries on laying in strange places and Minnie's are different then I will know Pearl's. If they aren't different I won't be able to fill in the chart! Help?! Lisa
Egluntyne
You just have to observe....and note who comes out of the nesting box looking pleased with themselves. Look at the colour of your hens ear lobes.....they indicate the colour of the eggs that hen will lay.
BeckyBoo
You can sometimes tell, even between similarly coloured eggs, you gradually learn who lays which eggs. That said there's only a few of ours that I am certian of the rest I can only tell if I actually see them coming out, plus obviously Lulu shouts her head off when she's done! Lesley
Yes, you can usually tell even with similar coloured eggs - different shape or a few speckles, that sort of thing.
Mel (& Paul)
Absolutely - Nigella and Clarrisa are both White Stars but Nigell's eggs are elongated and Clarrisa's are biggers. Niamh and Assumpta are both Maran crosses, but Niamh's are much darker brown - you will soon be able to tell the difference and impress (or bore) friends and relations with your knowledge
waders
Thanks everyone for all the great advice, I'm sure I'll work it out - eventually! Lisa
newlaidegg
I still can't tell the difference between my two brown egg layers unless they are side by side, which is why when I bought new hens I chose ones which would lay different coloured eggs! Hen Watch
It took me weeks to work out which of my chooks laid the 1st egg until I actually spotted her. My 2 Gingernuts and Pepperpot lay exactly same colour brown eggs and I couldn't tell them apart initially, but now 6 months later the Pepperpot's eggs are a bit speckldy. My Amber Star lays much paler brown eggs so I always know which ones are hers.
