Clintfinn
I've seen a rat going in and out of the run the last couple of days. Does anyone have any advice on how to get rid of rats. Our chickens roam freely round the garden so didn't want to use any poison that may harm the chickens. Would a dog or a cat be a better deterrant in the long run? Lindsay
Have a look further down this page, at the topic "Vermin" ... seems to be a problem for a few of us at the moment. Unfortunately, if you've seen one rat, there are bound to be several more around (they say for every one you see, there are ten more! Eek!). Anyway, there are poison options to keep your other pets safe, such as bait boxes, but they have to be put in place for a while before the rats will go near them. Follow Egluntine's advice re clearing up food etc etc on the other thread ... it's really sensible advice. Good Luck
Snowy
You can buy a special bait box for rats. A chicken would not be able to get in. The poison comes in blocks with a hole down the centre and loops onto a wire inside the box so ratty cannot drag it away. I've got two hidden in my garden - no sign of ratty for a long time! susanbb
I've got 2 stategically placed bait boxes and also use bait bags in the little corners where the girls cannot get them and the little Rolands can

Gallina
My council provides bait boxes and bait free of charge, and comes and renews the bait every fortnight until the rats stop eating it. So check first whether your council provides this service, as rat poison is not cheap.
