koo2cat
Hope I am posting this in the right place! We have a cube with the 2m run extension which is situated on wood chips on top of soil. We laid the woodchips pretty thickly. We have 4 chickens who are in the run quite a lot of the time. How often should we change the wood chips? We have only had the girls 2 weeks and it still looks absolutely fine as they scrat about alot. And whilst on the subject of cleaning, how often should I give the cube a thorough clean? Thanking you helpful lot in advance!
Eyren
It depends on the weather, the amount of poo being deposited per sq metre, etc - I change mine whenever it starts to look tired and manky, or starts to get a bit smelly. You can leave it at least another fortnight, probably nearer a month or so
sheik
Do you change the entire lot in one go? Or do you just take out the dirty stuff now and again and replace with new? /\dam
chickencam
Ours are on bark chips and we take the eglu and run off the area every few weeks and take off the top layer and then replace that with fresh chips. The area we have is quite deep about 8 -10 inches and they dig deep holes in it and even dust bathe in it in the summer. We have had our girls since last May with no problems of smell etc. The run area is at the top of a gentle slope and maybe some of the dirt runs off when it rains because the tree at the end of the run has got rather big
