KimW
Does Diatom kill red mites just like the Red Mite Powder? Or do I need to use both?
BarbaraJ
I think diatom is more a deterrent but i use both in my wooden coop.
meezers
I thought it was the other way around ? diatom kills and red mite powder deters ? am just about to order something called 'get rid' off ebay, anyone heard of it/ used it ? sounds like it works in a similar way to diatom, but uses algae instead of fossilised thingys ( that's the technical term by the way ) hope someone can tell us which to get before I order. KimW
I'm waiting too, before I place an order. Don't want to get both if I don't need to!
layla
personally i used red mite powder and wasn't impressed but de is brilliant it dries up their bodies and kills the little blighters i rub it in every crevice of the hen hut, dust the girls in it, dust the dogs in it i have a huge sack of it.Brilliant stuff. Ain't Nobody Here
I think (although a real expert will be along soon ) that Diatom is a preventative measure (but will kill red mite if it's there already) and Red Mite powder is a treatment for your hens if they get red mite (but can also be used as a preventative measure ). I brush Diatom round the roosting bars after a clean and I sprinkle Red Mite powder liberally into the nesting box (and occasionally brush under their wings too). Perhaps it's overkill but I'm happy using both.
