Newbie to forum, newbie to chickens.....my head is spinning!

Cathy, how high are your fences? Ours are the standard 5 foot panels and I'm worried about them getting over into the neighbours - Gladys has been stretching her wings in the run so I think she's keen to explore!!! :P

Ours are blue, black and amber comets from Garden Poultry - how high d'you reckon they might be able to fly? :?

I echo what Emma L says. I was very nervous about getting chickens, worried about everything, it's been great so far though. I absolutely love my little chickens.

I've got to rig up some chicken netting though. I keep an eye on them when they are out of the run and I'm constantly having to encourage them away from my "wannabe vegetable patch!"

Hi Emma L, My fences are 5ft panels. Not particularly high. I can talk to my neighbour over the fence. (After 5 weeks I mentioned the chickens to her and I was astonished that she hadn't noticed!)

I can't find the garden poultry website address! Duh! I wanted to see your chickens. From memory I think they are medium hybrids (like mine).

My garden backs on to other gardens and the semi I live in is separated from my "not attached" neighbour by a garage. So no access for the chickens to the road at the front.

I would not like to be responsible for your chickens flying away and getting hurt or lost! :( You have to assess the surrounding risks in your individual case. A risk assessment! probability and severity if they did escape. I felt my garden was quite secure and the gardens beyond mine too.

I only let them out for half an hour before dark at first, when they are naturally quieter anyway and should (mine did) take themselves back to the Eglu. Each night getting a little more confident. Now, if I need to before dark, I can get mine back in the Eglu with some porridge. They love it! I just add some hot water to oats to form a paste, with either raisins or dates chopped in. I've bought chicken spice and add a little of that too.
