my potatoes seem to be doing well in their tubs at the moment, thanks to advice from all of yous on this forum!!

 

one question still: what should the shoot look like when it is time to earth them up?

green and leafy? how tall? if i want them to be roots, should i not earth up as soon as i see the smallest shoot?

I think the gardening books suggest earthing up when the plant is eight inches tall.

However, I earth mine up as they grow, as soon as an inch or two is showing I shove a bit more dirt on

I figure that since frost will damage exposed shoots, the less showing, the less damage

 

By the way...my spuds are in compost bags

Are you meant to cover them completely Tara? Or do you leave a wee bit sticking out?

at this time of year I cover mine completely but as the frost risk lessens I only cover the stems and let the leaves catch the sun

covering is fine at the moment...

 

..my grandad believed in pre earthing up so to speak with a mound or ridge over the tubers all ready and waiting

I was wondering how much further to fill my potato bag. There is about 18 inches of soil in it now and the spud leaves are about 4 inches above soil level again does anyone think that I should keep going?
