We have eggs, but ...

Recommended Posts

We have eggs at last. Our omlet chickens (two GNRs and one Miss P) arrived on 13th March. We had our first little egg on Saturday :D . We had another egg on Sunday :D , and yet another one yesterday :D .

Now the but... each of the eggs look very different... The first one is quite dark brown and a lovely shiny shell. I assume this was one of the GNRs as she had been crouching for a couple of weeks. But the other two eggs, are much pinker with a rougher shell... Although the 2nd and 3rd egg are similar, they are still different shades of browny-pink...

So do chickens change the type of colour / shape / texture of eggs they lay... in which case, all three eggs have possibly come from one of the GNRs. Or, could it be that all three chickens are laying an egg each every three days???

When we went on our hen party, Pam seemed to know which egg had been laid by which chicken, very clearly. Whereas, I am none the wiser...

But still :D at having eggs at last. Collecting eggs is like Christmas morning every day!!

Any guidance would be appreciated...

Thank you.

Congratulations on the eggs!

Now, how to identify who laid what:

1 Have a day off work (or two) (including housework and cooking)

2 Place chair and garden umbrella (gazebo if it's snowing) beside eglu

3 Open egg port door whenever a chicken enters

4 Catch chicken in act of laying 8)

In theory you should be able to tell which one lays what as they do seem to have a signature egg colour and shape, the trouble is they can sometimes lay a different shade or shape to the norm, especially when they are just beginning to lay. If you weigh the eggs, you will also find that the weights vary very little (my campine eggs are nearly always 45g, occasionally 1 or 2g heavier, my skyline's are always 55g). Sorry - you may not want to be an egg anorak like me

Thanks for your comments.

The wait for eggs has been torture - seemingly even more so that being over a due date when pregnant!!

When I ordered the chickens, my husband was very very reticient, but was reassured by the 30 day money back guarentee. It was only on that basis that I was allowed to place the order. The 30 days runs out this Friday... And so my husband is convinced that someone from Omlet has been sneaking into our back garden and planting the eggs in our nesting box, just in case we were thinking of using our 'get out of jail free' card!!
