debbie26pet Posted April 9, 2008 Share Posted April 9, 2008 what can i get im tryin everythin for this hen about 24-26 if i think its her not laid any normal eggs yet only soft, got limestone and poultry spice and that bran stuff in pellets every day, they have a container with grit in run at all times, vinger stuff in water, was wormed last mth with flubevent, i add egg shells to there pellets when we use eggs, then the bits of treats as well, so why in just over a week 3 soft shell eggs 1 in coop which wasnt touched, and 2 on grass that the others all run for and eat. so why? so now im thinking calcium in water any ideas of any makes were i can get from??????? If she is still only 24 - 26 weeks her egg laying tackle is still immature and she may just need a bit more time to get into the swing of things. It's very common for a hen just coming into lay to have a run of soft shells. One of mine is prone to them - when she first started laying her first 4 were soft/thin shelled, then at 18 months old she moulted and stopped laying. Again, when she came back into lay we had a run of 6 or 7 that were soft or thin. She lays perfect eggs now! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Snowy Posted April 9, 2008 Share Posted April 9, 2008 If an egg breaks in the run, there is not alot you can do about them eating it. As long as they don't learn how to break the shells of whole eggs - often they don't seem to realise that they are the same thing, luckily! I think your hens are still very young and it is not unusual to have a few blips in the egg laying department until their tackle settles down.
