Chickens at Wyvale Garden Centre!!

Recommended Posts

our local branch is in Bold Heath, it's quite a rural area, right next to farm shop and near some stables so I was quite surprised they didn't have any but also quite relieved.

Last time we went into Cadbury garden Centre in Bristol they had chickens, they were being kept in trios - 2 hens and a cockerel. They had 3 pekin bantams behind a glass screen - nothing to do, on wood chippings, no apparent nest box, roosting bars etc.

They then had 3 speckeldy type chickens on the floor in a chicken house/rabbit hutch, which had an inside bit (With a mesh door) but that again seemed to have no separate rossting bars/ nesting box. One of the hens had been sold, but what are they going to do with the cockerels?

The store was closing when we saw them first and I was too much in shock to ask sensible questions!

I'm going back today to investigate further.

After reading your posts I had to go and check my local Wyevale in Wavendon... no chicks there, in fact they've also stopped selling little caged birds and hamsters. Only fish for sale now, although they still stock pet food.

I asked a girl assistant and she told me she also keeps chickens so we spent a little while chatting about them and exchanging information about the best places to buy chicken food/chickens etc...

For Milton Keynes area we found the best places to be the Walnut Tree farm (food only, no livestock) and the farm at the Brickhill roundabout of the A5 (behind the petrol station).

Further afield, in Towcester, is the Bell Plantation (my favourite place at the moment...) apart from feeds, books and other garden things, they stock a variety of chickens, look after them, offer to take orders if you're looking for a particular breed, and have a couple of assistants who also keep chickens themselves and give you advice. Some breeds need to be bought as a pair though...
