craftyhunnypie
My parents visited Wyevale garden centre at Tarporley, Cheshire today & they have chickens for sale. I think they were hybrids, but they couldn't remember the name of the breed. Apparently they were brown and had a short name, mum thought it began with O and was something brown??? They were 15 quid each. Has anyone else seen these at Wyevale? Emma.x

Guest
god I hope they're keeping them in suitable conditions etc, I've got enough to worry about at the moment
koo2cat
We live near Solihull and our big Notcutts Garden centre is selling Warren chickens and wooden chicken houses. They are £15 each (the chickens not the hen houses). They are being kept quite well but I asked if they sold any chicken feed, mixed corn, health products etc and the answer was no!! I have to say if you are going to sell chickens you should be at least able to sell food as well. It worries me that they would sell some hens and not really know anything about them! I asked an assistant if she had any anti-peck spray and she looked at me blankly (they sell parrots as well!). I hope people aren't tempted as a spare of the moment thing when they are buying their summer bedding plants then get the chooks home and think now what!!! Much better to buy chickens from a proper chicken place me thinks!!!
Snowy
Sounds like they are selling ISA browns. Another garden centre jumping on the bandwagon
Mirkwood
Yep i would have Isa Browns. If they are going to sell the chooks they should sell the rest of the stuff that we need. i have enough to fill a shed

However they should at least have someone who knows what they're on about there though. Never mind. £15 for a Lohman Brown is a rip off though-I could buy one of those for under a tenner from the breeder we got our chooks from. Guest
I don't think they should be obliged to sell chicken feed as most breeders don't. . people in garden centres are more likely to impulse buy so they probably wouldn't have bought any food up front whereas people who go to a breeder will presumably have everything prepared for their chickens arrival as it's not an impulse buy. I hope, like someone else said, there isn't now going to be a spate of 'buy now regret later' chicken purchasing.
FruitandNutCake
My local Wyvale has a pet section that stocks petfood, medicines, accesories etc. but they don't stock the pets. I haven't been there recently to see if they have chickens, but may pop up later to check. If they stock other pet food, then if they are stocking chickens, they should also stock every thing else that is needed for the chickens. I agree that if you can pick up a chickin with your bedding plants, there could be a few impulse buys. You can not rely on everyone to have common sense

Chili
Went to my local Dobbies at the weekend in Atherstone, and yes, they have started selling chickens too. There were only 2 of them there at the time and although they looked ok, I still wanted to buy them and bring them home The sign said they sold 4 breeds including speckledys and light sussex and I think they were £15 each. FruitandNutCake
I phoned my local Wyvale this afternoon. The woman who answered my call seemed very puzzled when I asked about chickens. I explained that other branches of Wyvale had started stocking them and she said "How bizarre - we stopped stocking livestock a long time ago!" So It is certainly not widespread (at the moment!). Strepsy
I visited the Tarporley Wyevale earlier. Can confirm they are Isa Browns and there were 3 in the pen being sold at £16.50 or 2 for £30. They didn't sound at all happy, I heard the bokking as I walked in the door so headed straight for them. Saying that though, the pen did seem ok for short-term quarters. It had a long perch, straw on the floor, a dust bath, food and water obviously, a ball, a dodgy cabbage hanging up, grit and a cardboard nest box. Obviously I'm pretty new to chook keeping but they definitely did not sound happy. As I said they were bokking loudly when I went in and as I watched were making very unhappy noises. Not heard any of mine sound so upset tbh. They were selling pellets, chick crumbs I think, and mixed corn. Plus housing and water and food containers. They also had a lot of the 'Keeping Pet Chickens' book on the book shelves.

I explained that other branches of Wyvale had started stocking them and she said "How bizarre - we stopped stocking livestock a long time ago!" So It is certainly not widespread (at the moment!). It could be that they are testing the water in one or a few branches - all retailers do this. ie getting ready to jump on the bandwagon I think its OK if chickens are widely available as long as they are well cared for before they are sold. Wonder when Tesco will join the fray and start selling live chickens

chocchick
I'm not sure making noise is a sound of being unhappy. If I go to the window the chickens make a huge fuss and noise, and my friend's chickens do too if we look after the chickens and turn up at the allotment. Mine start behaving frantically if there might be food. Should ask my Mum if the Timperley branch sells them. TBH you might not neccessarily impulse buy just because it is at a garden centre. Karen & co.
went to our local wyvale yesterday, no chickens. Maybe they're trialing it in just a few stores? I popped into the branch near to Tarporley on Friday just to check and they had 3 Isa Browns in an area, it was clean and had various things for them to do, perches, branches a cabbage hanging up to peck at and they looked nice and healthy and inquisative, one had a real glint in her eye but it still seemed unfair to sell them from an indoor pet area Actually the whole garden centre seemed rather tired and faded, it didn't feel like that a few years ago Karen x
