Three in the afternoon, and I hear a vixen

Recommended Posts

The back door is open, the neighbours are in and out of their garden (hanging up washing etc), and I am absorbed in work on the computer, and suddenly I register a sound that has been going on for about half a minute outside, loud and unmistakeable. My first thought is - eek, I hope I closed everything at the run when I gave the hens their sweetcorn an hour ago - and then the dog and I run outside. Thank heavens, the hens are fine; the run is intact; no sign of the fox.

Am writing this immediately 'cos I guess one cannot be reminded too often, at this time of year, about the threat of foxes and their cubs. My legs turned to jelly, I can tell you, as soon as I realised that the hens were OK and I could relax (sort of) again.

When I let them out for an hour later today, I am going to be SUPERvigilant.

You can let the hens out, but you have to watch them like a hawk at this time of year. No going to the shed to get a trowel or turning your back on them while you talk over the fence, let alone a visit to the loo.

Foxes come so fast from nowhere, and they are lean, mean, and starving.
