I have just got 2 indian runner ducks they are around 3 days old, I have a silver and a lavender both girls.

 

the silver is fine but the the lavender seems to have problems with her walking, she takes a couple of steps then has to sit down down abit then gets up and trys again. I have also noticed that she hunches her back and sort of almost tip toes around.

 

other then that they are both eating and drinking fine!!! what do you think is wrong,?????

What you describe sounds a bit like the way they get about soon after hatching, but at three days old I would expect her to be a bit more steady on her feet.

It could possibly be that she is a little bit slower than the other one to recover from hatching.

The other thing that springs to mind is splayed leg,

Can I ask what you are keeping them on?

They need a none slippery surface, an old towel that you can wash out or rubber shelf grip are good things to keep them on, newspaper is not good it gets slippery.

And what you are feeding them?

Medicated chick crumb can make ducklings poorly and they can go down hill very quickly.

I would contact the breeder that you got them from they may have a better idea if anything is wrong.

Don't panic just yet, like I said she may have had a difficult hatch and still be recovering, one of my goslings took a lot longer to recover than the other two and I did worry something was wrong but she is fine now

the breader gave us a bag of chick crumb and we are still on that! (more then enough for 2 birds for 2/3 weeks) they are on a towel...... she seems happy in herself you know eating and drinking well, she's quite quiet but then they both are, with the odd cherp here and there.

 

she seems just a lil bit smaller then the other one too.

She may just be still finding her feet bless

Our Baby is spending more time outside during the day now (her own choice) but she likes to spend her evenings indoors with us, then at bedtime she sleeps in the utility in her pet carrier.

I hope all goes well with the little one, it might be worth giving the breeder a call and letting them know you are concerned, that way you have let them know there may be a problem from the outset.

I am sure you will have bonded with the little one by now and won't want to part with her, but if she is poorly the breeder may exchange her for a healthy one if they know from the beginning there is a problem.

You could just have the two of them as outside ducks who wear nappies when they come indoors to visit

The best of both worlds

I have to admit Baby seems happier now she gets out more, tho she still wants to come in by late afternoon and sit with me in the evening.

She is laying better too, no more soft shells and she is laying almost every day.

I do think that having her indoors for her first year has created a bond between us but she is all grown up now and decides for herself where she wants to be, I feel quite honoured that she chooses to spend a lot of her time with us

I also got 2 indian runner ducklings this week they are so cute.They run around my living room and dont seem scared at all.I have videoed them as babys.Will have to post pics on here dont know what to call them yet thought id see what there like.Or tho you ask my 6 year old and she will come out with all sorts.

Hi well she is still arching her back butI think she is taking more steps before she sits down!

 

I called the breeder and said it could be down to a gean (sp?)and she could just be slower and learning to walk etc and that she will most likely grow out of it at somepoint!

 

 

She is still eating and drinking andseems to be growing so tima will tell I suppose! my son has called her "pop"

 

Hopefully pop by name and not by nature lol they have both also strted to put the heads under the water too when they drink.......

When Baby was about ten days old we put her in the bath (water deep enough so she could swim but not too deep to stand up in, and not too cold)

You have to watch them all the time to be safe , when you get them out wrap them in a towel to get excess water off and make sure they have somewhere warm to dry off (in the sunshine is good if it's a hot day)
