Freshen up run space?

Recommended Posts

I am moving the Eglu once a week, but with 3 chickens the run area is pecked and pooped to nothing by the time the week is up. Our lawn isn't massive but I have calculated that they shouldn't 'revisit' the same area for 5 weeks so plenty of time for recovery with fast growing lawn seed and compost. But I really want to be rid of the poopy smell that is emenating and attracting flies. Does anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, the girls do free range from 5 till bedtime so they aren't 'cooped' up ;)

I move my Eglu every 2-3 days so the grass dont get trashed and brush the poops out of the run everyday so theres no build up.The only real way you can see where the run has been is the grass has been mown short, but theres no real damage.

Adding garden lime will reduce the acidity of soil which has had chooks pooping on it,but be careful as to how much you use.Lawn grasses prefer it slightly aciditic (hence why spring/summer lawn foods are rich in nitrogen) and only weeds like clover flourish in alkaline soil so you may find after while your grass becomming sp"Ooops, word censored!".
