Poisonous Garden Plants

Recommended Posts

We sadly lost Gwen yesterday, I feel really bad we have only had the chooks for 3 weeks and they were all really healthy and lively when we got them.

But just over a week ago Gwen got ill, her comb drooped and went pink, she was really sleepy, not moving much, had very green runny poo, so we took her to the vets and she was put on a course of Baytril but she didnt improve. Yesterday she was being sick so we took her back to vets and sadly they said they didnt think she would improve and it was best to put her down. They couldnt tell me what was wrong with her and now I am thinking what did I do wrong, did she eat something poisonous in the garden to make her sick? but the other two are fine no signs of illness at all. Chives are these dangerous to chickens ? as they have demolished my chives and I notice that Gwen did enjoy eating them.

So sorry Gwen. You must not blame yourself. Just remember that your other chickens are fine and healthy.

All my chickens have eaten lots of my chives with no ill effects so I don't think it would be that.

Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason and nothing you can do.

Sorry to hear this - unfortunately chickens just do sometimes become ill and die for no obvious reason. It's very unlikely that one of yours ate something that the other chickens didn't also eat, you know how they usually jump on each other if someone finds something tasty.

Mine don't eat chives, but I'm certain they wouldn't be poisonous to chickens. I doubt if it was anything she ate. I hope your other two chooks will continue to thrive and you will be able to stop worrying.
