Abbey Road Girl
I had asked if hens liked bindweed--do they ever! Letting them free range has meant the transformation of a weed-choked garden into what looks more like no-man's-land. They are also very partial to the tall plants with large fuzzy spear-shaped leaves and tiny blue "forget-me-not" type flowers. They rummage in the ivy but don't eat it, which is just as well given that it's poisonous. Acanthus has been left alone, along with roses and winter jasmine. I have some shrubs to plant out in some of the places they've cleared but am finding that I'm becoming worried about running out of bindweed!!! Tara.F
you're kidding? I've been working sooooo hard to remove the bindweed from the end of the garden so I can put their run there!!!! Dave said we were gonna have to concrete it! We thought the bindweed would poison them

Dave said we were gonna have to concrete it! We thought the bindweed would poison them It's their favourite of all the weeds, Tara, and it's getting in scarce supply. This afternoon all four of them were lined up against the fence doing the Bindweed Jump! They had finished off all the leaves they could reach standing on tippy toes. Too bad you already went to so much trouble!
superjules
Our chicken run went on the most bindweed infested area of our garden. No matter how thoroughly I dug it up, the flaming stuff always came back. It still comes up in the areas where there's no chooks allowed, like between my lettuces, and round the fruit bushes, but it's far more manageable now.
