chelsea
nice bright red comb in a point of lay hen. (no purple or dark combs) Bright clear eyes, no mucky beaks/nostrils or bums An active perky hen is a sign of a happy hen. Dont pick the quiet hen hunched in the corner. I've never been to a poultry market before so am not sure how the hens are shown to prospective buyers its my own personal preference to see hens free ranging in an enclosure at a breeders (as you get a better idea if they are moving) ...would they just be in cages at a market? Asking about vaccinations might be a good idea aswell.
syed_king12
thank you very much and yes they are mostly in cages.. i will really ask them about vaccination
Egluntyne
I would quarantine any hens you buy at a poultry market, to be on the safe side. Not all dealers are scrupulous and there is always a risk that you could be sold a sick hen.
Hen Watch
Neve been to a poultry market but think I would be worried about being sold cockrels by mistake. Some breeds are hard to sex early but an agent or breeder might have an arrangement to take any back that don't turn out to be hens. But found this useful Omlet guide to buying hens with lots of info on what to look for. www.omlet.co.uk/files/public/omlet_guid ... ickens.pdf
