i heard recently that in the winter you have to put vaseline on their combs to stop it from hurting . i had never seen or heard anything about this before and i wondered if it was the done thing to do. and if it is how often, how much, and how do you do it without making a right 2 and 8?

I have never done this, and all my hens have survived the winter with intact combs.

 

I imagine it might be more necessary up in the icy wastes of the far north. But perhaps it is a good idea if your run isn't covered and it is a really bitterly cold spell.

 

If I had to do it, I would warm the Vaseline to make it softer and do it through the eggport when they were dozy.

There was a discussion on this in the depths of winter and IIRC the answer was that Eglu owners in the icy parts of America could consider it but that it was not necessary in the UK

cocks are more prone to frostbite in the combs,i've not known it yet in a hen.
