Ice cream maker recommendations needed

Recommended Posts

Hello

It's my birthday mid June and I really want an ice cream maker! does anyone have any recommendations for them? I only want one for around 30-35? not one of the £250+ ones.

I quite like the ones where yo upre freeze a bowl as they seem to be quicker to make it as you always keep the bowl in the freezer and one that.

Thanks

Helen

Hi Helen, I've got the Rosemary Conley one which cost about £20 if I remember rightly. It's the type where you keep the bowl in the freezer.

Have to confess have not yet made ice cream in it but it's great for making frozen yoghurt! You just put the yoghurt in and leave it processing for 20 mins. So put in before sitting down to dinner and have dessert ready when you are finished. The only problem with it is it's not very big so will process only one of the large tubs of yoghurt at a time. Fine for 2 or 3 but not for any size of family that includes teenage boys. (I guess that's Rosemary trying to keep the portion sizes down...)

Have just bought an ice-cream recipe book now we have our own eggs so will be trying it out soon.

I have the Panasonic ice cream makerr which I found on Amazon for £19.99.

I am delighted with it. It is only small, about the size of a largish side plate but it produces a good quantity to feed 4 ice cream lovers at a go.

It has a battery in the top so you simply make your ice cream mix and put it in the bowl (no need to pre-freeze) and pop on the lid and press the on button. Pop in the freezer for about 5-6 hours and you will have lovely ice cream. It gives it a stir every so often so no need to take it out and do this manually. Don't leave it too much longer of the balde will be frozen in hard. I tend to take it out after 5 hours (still a bit soft) and scoop it into a freeer container. Once frozen hard, take this out a good 30 mins before you will want to eat it and let it soften a bit.

I have made chocolate, vanilla and coffee and also a yoghurt and honey ice cream. All gorgeous. If you go for this option, it comes with a small recipe book. I always double up on the quantities as the recipes only give a small amount i.e. I make up a 4 egg yolk custard, not the 2 in the recipe book.

Hope this helps your decision.

Ask on freecycle - for a lot of us they are a 5 minute wonder! Bought one for James and never managed to make anything we actually liked.
