Chicken Licken
The local starlings have discovered the grubs full of food and mob the run and the chickens. I keep the eglu inside omlet netting and the girls free range in the fenced area most of the day. Any ideas how I can get rid of the wretched starlings?? For the time being I have strung up a line of CDs on string and put some garden netting over the door with fronds cut through it so the girls can still get in an out. The trouble is they haven't worked out they can get out yet! This comes at the same time as my neighbour had a go at me for my chickens attracting rats to his garden shed (more likely to be the junk he has stacked up all over his garden). He says they are wild birds! - obviously a lot of wild birds will come when called and eat from your hands. Grrrr. Still I feel I need to get rid of the starlings as they are a genuine nuisance and I really don't want them sharing run space with the girls. Any ideas anyone??? Hen Watch
Sorry, no idea about the Starlings. What set up do you have? My grub feeder is in the eglu run and other birds don't go inside (even when run open and chooks are free ranging). Bit "rich" of your neighbour to say your chooks are causing rats to live under his shed. Does he not realise that rats/mice will live under any nice, dry, quiet dark places (like his shed or a compost bin or old wood piles). purple hen
Hi, don't know about starlings, but one of my girls made me by running the whole length of the lawn to chase a jackdaw away from the grub (cheeky jackdaw was right inside run). Jackdaw hasn't been back since. Val
