Lo
Hi all - new to this forum but I have been peeking for months and have a problem which no one seems to know the answer to. My wyandotte has a problem with watery poo. She has been like it for 8 weeks now. About 4 weeks ago I took her to the vet and my chickens (2 of them) were put on Baytril. This did nothing whatsoever. I then sent a sample to Retfords and they diagnosed coccidiosis and sent Baycox (also she is sneezing but no mucus and they sent aureomycin). This was a 2 day course. By mid week when there was no change I rang them again and they said to give another 2 day course. This has also had no affect. She is eating. Drinking a big amount which may actually be causing the watery poo but then the question is what is causing her thirst? She has been checked for mites. I give verm-x once a month and will start this again tomorrow. Poo seems to have the normal colours, ie bit of grey with white but then in a horrid slimy watery coating. The other chicken (sebright) is unaffected. Today they have been sleeping for most of the day although this may be due to the amount of meds they have been on. I gave them warm mash, eggs, apple, spice in live yoghert yesterday and today which they greedily ate. They are both coming up to a year old, was laying (although now not, but again this is probably due to meds). The last week of eggs from the wyandotte were very strangely shaped and then the last couple were soft shelled. Has anyone got any ideas please. Cooks
I am sorry to hear this, I am new to keeping chickens myself although I have read on here a few times about people not finding Verm-x very effective .. I use Flubenvet as recommended by others on here. I am sure others will be along to give advice soon. I hope all goes well.
Egluntyne
I agree....vermex is not much good at getting rid of a worm infestation, but it might have its uses as a preventative. I would get her on Flubenvet straight away if she were mine, as the symptoms do suggest that she might have worms.
Clur
Re: the watery poo, I find Bokashi bran helps on that score - I put a handful in with their layers pellets
Lo
Hi - thanks for your comments - according to Retfords who analysed her sample, it is definitely not worms (although I have ordered some flubenvet for the future). Retfords are still convinced that it is cocci and are sending me something different, although I have heard that baycox is usually the best thing for this.
