Changed egg colour

Recommended Posts

One of our 1yr old Gingernuts has begun to lay a different coloured egg.

Originally it was medium brown with quite large irregular speckles but suddenly it has changed to very pale beige with many very tiny speckles.

Is this usual? I haven't heard of it happening before.

Just a thought, I changed to a different brand of pellets abround the time it happened. Could that be responsible?

Good Morning,

Hmmmm, always the exception to the rule!! :)

i posted a query very similar few days ago. My chicken who was laying lovely cream eggs is now laying brown ones, yet the article says its the opposite way around .the older the chicken gets the lighter the egg.

Maybe my chicken has my mentality, need to think & feel younger everyday - hence her darkening eggs

It does happen from time to time.

**This Article** explains why.

That's an interesting article. Thanks.

The chicken involved is less than 1yr on from POL also, I have kept a record of egg weight/size and for months it has been in the 70-80gm range, mainly 75gm plus throughout. She has always laid good sized eggs. However, in the last week or so she has produced larger eggs including a 90gm egg 5mm longer than previously.

It remains to be seen if the other 2 which are the same age and lay pigmented eggs change colour too.

Difficult to know with our other, white hen of course (!)but for months she has laid eggs so large that they will not fit easily in an "extra large" egg box and this despite being the smallest bird.
