Have had eglu and chickens since wednesday. Very exciting! But just wondering how I clean the run out - it's based on a woodchip area - won't the surrounding floor get soaked if I use a hose? Do I have to crawl in under the wire?Looks a bit inaccessible to me? Help please..

Hi Maddie and welcome to the forum .

 

I have an eglu & run on soil with hemcore. Every 6 weeks or so I move the run to the side and if I have a willing helper, I move the eglu too. On your own, if you lift the run using the open door, you can swing it round so the run is free for you to get at. With 2 of you, it's easy to pick up the eglu & run and move it completely to the side.

 

I rake off the top few inches (for compost), sprinkle some garden lime and Stalosan F round, then add a new layer of hemcore.

I just use a rake to get the bark chips out of my run (hands & knees job). I can only just reach to the eglu...

 

However, I gave it a good clean at the weekend and moved the run like the posted above mentioned. I also improved the drainage to stop the bark chips getting so muddy when it rains, seems to have worked and I recommend it if you're on clay. Just use a garden fork to make lots of holes in the soil and brush in lots of sharp sand, then put the bark/wood chips on top.

 

Incidentally can anyone tell me where to get wood chips? All my local Wickes/B&Q etc only seem to sell bark chips which turn to mush quicker.

Thanks for your replies. I was getting worried and thought "Ooops, word censored!"ody had replied to me, but my son showed me i wasn't using the forum properly.

I'll try both methods I think, both raking inside when I am on my own and moving the whole thing if I have got help. Currently I am using bark chippings as I couldn't find wood chippings either. I have a feeling wood chippings may be more expensive, but I don't really know.Thanks for your help. Maddie

It's MUCH easier to move the eglu using either of the above two methods with the top of it off
