Cyber Chook
I have a question - I think I've seen this before on the forum but can't locate it. Anyway, I saw a really good nutritionist yesterday to go over my diet, being post-cancer and so on, and she suggested feeding the chickens flax seed, to boost the omega's in the eggs, I think. Can anyone tell me if they do this for their chickens, and if so, where do you get the flax seed from, and how much roughly do you allow for each chook? chucknette
Hi I bought myself some flaxseed from Holland and Barrett a while ago and I gave some to my chooks. I only sprinkled a small amount on their food and I must say most of it was still in their feed at the end of the day so they werent overfussed. Nor was I! Its like eating bird seed. Karen & co.
My girls love it in porridge, they manage to eat all of it when it sticks together with the oats and yoghurt Karen x
Troy
Flaxseed you can usually buy at most equestrian suppliers. We used o boil a small amount down for the horses (boiling it swells it up and gets all the goodness out)and add it into their feeds. I wonder if cooking it down and adding it once cooled might be more favourable for chooks??? Troy
StephanieSB
I can't locate the source now (i'll try to find it), but I did read that too much flax seed can cause diarrhea in some hens, so to be sparing with it. I remember, as I use flax seed a lot in my morning smoothies and have a lot of it around and was wondering about giving it to the chickens. It is, this source says, good for them, but in moderation so as not to loosen their bowels.

MedusA
I use a sprinkle in the girls' porridge. They seem to eat it, but then my girls are gannets and eat anything and everything!
