Questions from a gardening novice

Recommended Posts

Hello there i really want to grow my own vegetables and herbs but i have a few questions which may seem stupid!

Firstly, I heard there is a soil testing gadget which tells you the suitability of the soil in your garden for growing veg, does anyone know what they are called?

Secondly if im growing veggies in the garden can i do them straight in the ground or do i have to buy raised beds?

Thirdly how easy is it to grow veggies in a pot?

And finally I would love to grow some edible flowers, but im having a hard time finding seeds that are organic and haven't been sprayed with pesticides can anyone recommend a supplier?

Thanks in advance and sorry if these questions seem silly :D

hello :D and welcome to the forum :D

you can plant seeds for vegies straight into the ground :D just read the instructions at the back of the packet as to when and go for it :D

you can grow vegies in a pot too :D same idea, just bung them in the pot :D

as to the soil tester or the edible flowers.... no idea sorry.

You should be able to find edible flower seeds quite easily - just google for organic seeds

The Organic Gardening company may do flowers - i usually only use them for veggies.

The soil tester will just be called a soil testing kit - you can get a basic one quite cheaply from all garden centres. You just add a small amount of soil to the test tube provided and add some water.......

Soil testing kit, I've never used one lol

Depends on the soil quality... but I would just bung in some stuff this year and plan/think about raised beds for next years main growing season. This is what I did after moving to my new house

Thirdly how easy is it to grow veggies in a pot?

Very, although watering is more of a pain

Have no idea... hope that helps ;)

No such thing as a silly question.. unless you keep asking it of course

Edible flowers - all sorts of flowers are edible, but nasturtiums are really easy to grow from seed, which is readily available, even organic seed.

Or borage, that's easy to grow and edible.

There are loads of others, too, but those should be easy to get hold of and easy to grow to start with!

We grow quite a lot in pots. Herbs, mange tout, strawbs, lettuice, spring onion, rocket, radish. We have done spuds too. No problems.

Like matthew says they do need keeping an eye on for going dry.

The best way to learn is to have a go and make the mistakes as you go along!

Good luck! :D
