battery hens and company law or Hugh v Tesco's

Recommended Posts

I suggested on another thread that HFW's money might have been better spent on print advertising.

I should explain that company law requires companies to place the profits of shareholders above all other considerations. The law is on Tesco's side, not on Hugh's and certainly not on the side of the chickens.

Furthermore, if institutional shareholders (pension funds, etc) make up the majority, they are also constrained by similar legislation.

On the other hand, law often gives way when public opinion is brought strongly to bear, so it's not a lost cause, merely a risky one.

When Tesco's plays the "people need cheap food" card, they are really defending their own need for big profits. Free range eggs, by the way, are splendid cheap food!

Being slightly cynical, I suspect HFW is aware of that. BUT great the man is putting his money where his mouth is! He'll also be aware of the good publicityhe/the cause will get through doing this...let's hope he gets the support he needs!
